Those could be knit hose in a pattern like the small shepherd's check hose my wife knits. Or they could be cut and sewn from woven cloth (cadadh) which was also rather common in the past.

If you want knit hose, you can commission a knitter (such as my wife). If you want the cadadh, your best bet would be to find some woolen cloth in a pattern you like and experiment with making your own. (I'm sure someone can find some online instructions). You are basically sewing a tube around your foot and leg, and it is important to get a fit that is tight around your calf, but loose enough around your ankle to allow you to get your foot through.

    Good luck!

I remembered (and found) some threads and members who might be able to help you out--if you're up for some knitting. I already asked about purchasing a pair of these:

    That's not happening.

Sydnie7 also knitted some lovely tops that could, I'm assuming, be continued as an entire sockie:

There. I don't like it when people have to lie about me. The truth is damning enough.

You're all wrong, especially you, LitTrog. That's a pair of solid-colored hose (red or brown or orange depending on your monitor) with dark "rakers" knitted in. They wouldn't be terribly hard to make. They're not the Shepherd's Plaid, either large or small, because all the diamonds are the same color and they're bordered by the dark stripes.

Bah. You guys with your "knowledge" and "talents." Always taking the legs out from under my ignorant nincompoopery. I still like my idea better--no work involved, and I get to reclaim the sassy hosiery my wife stole from me.

Rakers are the single-stitch-wide diagonal stripes that you often see in "tartan" hose, like these:

Here the rakers are the white and red stripes.

However, In My Humble Opinion when i enlarge the picture the reddish stripes appear to be wider than one-stitch-wide. But I may very well be mistaken.

Well, let's use the white stripes in your avatar as our example.

    LitTrog,

I love the hose she made referred to in your post #11. I wish I had THAT pattern, they look great! Very talented. I will be looking forward to the pattern when you find it for the hose in the painting.
