Here I was just gonna get better chain John. Why toss it? Chain isn't appropriate for casual wear? This stuff is all new to me!

    Thanks,

Frank: Some folks, and I am one of them, use a chain for formal wear and a leather sporran belt/strap for casual wear.

The knock on chains is that over time they will rub permanent, unsightly abrasions into the material of the kilt, especially if the chain is a cheaper one with a rougher surface. Other folks obviate that problem by "tossing" their chain belt and using a leather one for all occasions. Other folks think that chains are a requisite accessory at formal occasions.

There is nothing wrong with replacing your existing chain with a higher-quality, smoother-surfaced one and using it all the time, except that you will then have to listen to folks repeat the "explanation" I just treated you to.

I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.
