The Three cogs, Illegitimus Non Carborundum (Don't let the Bas...) variant is called "Machine" and is at the bottom of the "select clan" dropdown.

They don't have an image of it but if you go the the Show us your Kilt Pins thread, it's Pin 13 in Post #4. In fact there are quite a few pins in that thread (not just my posts) that would work equally well as a hat badge and might give you some inspiration.

A former band mate used to wear his US Army officer's cap badge (the eagle and shield) instead of a clan badge.

I would think anything about 3 or so inches in diameter (or square) would do. Any larger runs the risk of weighing down the hat. Any smaller would look more like a lapel pin put on the hat by mistake.

I wear the red Jerusalem cross on mine. It serves as the emblem of my primary reenactment troop so it seemed like the thing to do. I would say to keep your eyes out for one that says something about you.
