Welcome from down near Albany NY. I grew up in Massena, just across the river from you fine folks.

My ancestry is mostly from SDG, as my original Alguire ancestors were Tory loyalists and moved from central NY to SDG in the 1770's. My dad's mom was a full blooded Scot of the Clan Campbell, and was born on Croil Island. My great grandfather William Alguire had a store at Farron's Point. During prohibition in the states, my father's dad and his brothers did a brisk business transporting liquor across a then-wild St. Lawrence River. I have Alguire, Barkley, Reddick, Vallance and Nibbs relatives still in the area.

We don't get back up that way often, but I have applied for a visa and enhanced driver's license so I can easily enter Canada. It makes me laugh to think that as kids in the 60's we use to cross the border all the time in Fort Covington with no one the wiser. There would be large stones with metal plaques at the border demanding you stop and go back somewhere to Customs and Immigration. How times have changed.

    Best of luck to you!

Many thanks. I totally sympathize with the enhanced license and passport issues. My band is supposed to play on Feb 23rd in Ogdensburg NY in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Ogdensburg. I can't go because I don't have my papers. I've also missed out on day trips across the river to Sprague's and Trombino's in Massena.

When I was in high school some of the guys were in the SD&G but my budy and I were in the Naval reserve at HMCS Carleton in Ottawa. Just a little rivalry there not to mention sharing the parade ground with the Bytown Gunners. BTW Mrs.Crash was born and raised in Cornwall. Going to Maxville this year?
I'm just trying to be the person my dog thinks I am.

Oh, yes. I'm also in the South Glengarry pipe band (about 90% of us have both the SG and SD&G uniforms), and we're one of the duty bands on the day before the Games proper, then we play the Tattoo that evening.

Jim Brownell former MPP for your area will be inducted as the next Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel of the SD&G Highlanders, The Glens, on April 4th.

Yep, Jim is a great guy and the honour is well deserved.

We applied here in NY state for both passports and enhanced licenses late January and got them 13 days later! I was verily impressed. Get your papers in order!

I assume both Violi's and the Village Inn are still open in Massena? It's been a long time since we were up that way, but those were our favorite places to go.

    Best of luck to ya!

    Hi
Not trying to divert the conversation, but might a passerby inquire as to what an "enhanced license" is, or what benefits it bestows?

I've never heard of such, and have had no problems, driving or rental, during many visits to Canada.

    Thanks!
    JT
