As discussed, their plain weave is 8 or 9 oz tie weight. Their twill weave I assume is a 10 oz weight. I know they do keep some stock of this cloth, as well. I don't think they do anything heavier as stock, except for special situations (such as the St. Ninian tartan).
if you actually look at the page it does say:-
on the tie weight " Buy this Plain Weave Material and make up any product you wish, 8oz 100% Pure New Wool"
and on the skirt weight "Buy this Twill Weave Material and make into any product you wish, 10oz 100% Pure New Wool."

So while we are completely in agreement that really the standard tartans they weave are really too light for kilts, they have at least been clear on their website of the weights and type of weave of the lighter fabrics although I imagine they don't have a wonderful selvedge!

That's bizarre. When I follow the link to the materials page, this is all the description I see:
"Tartan Plain Weave Material 54” – 152cm Wide (100% Pure New Wool)
Buy this plain weave material and make up virtually any tartan product you wish. Lightweight and comes in 100% new wool.
Material sold in whole yards only."

No mention of the fabric weight. Same for the twill weave. Same for the silk.

At first I thought it might be a glitch on their US price page, but I checked their UK and Canadian price pages and find the same thing. I have no idea why the page would show different information when you load it up, but there you have it.

About the selvage, I have made a child's kilt from their 10 oz twill weave and don't recall having an issue with the selvage. Their 8 oz would not have a good kilt selvage, but then no one would be making a kilt from it anyway!

Paul this is very curious. I have just copied the text direct from the site and I can't see any mention of the weight either.

"Buy this plain weave material and make up virtually any tartan product you wish. Lightweight and comes in 100% new wool."

Thought it must be a transatlantic anomaly, but obviously not.

We must have entered the "twill-light" zone.

I had a quick look on their site soley because the different things you people are seeing intrigued me. It seems that if you go first to the St Ninian product page (through the icone "St Ninian Products" at the top of the page) and then click on "material" in the side menu, you get the page that Paul is seeing. If you go directly to the material page, through the appropriate icone "Material" at the top of the page, you get the page that everyone else is seeing!

So everyone is right and no one is wrong!!
