I'm with the majority here, if the lad wants a Black Watch, buy him that. He'll wear it a LOT more if it's what he wants and feels comfortable in.
Plus it's easy to dress a traditional kilt down and wear it modern/casual, with the added bonus that he could dress up a bit more too.
A contemporary MUG style kilt is only going to go so far up the 'fancy' scale.

Made from easy-care acrylic fabric at least that is what the website says

Stillwater's 'Economy' is about 4 to 5 yards, their 'Standard' is about 8, not sure about the fabric weight.

Of course the added bonus of ordering from Jerry is that your son's kilt will be here the day before you order it, thanks to his warp-squirrels doing the deliveries.
When I ordered my son's kilt a few years back I think it arrived in 2 days.

I agree with the rabble. Blackwatch.
Either a Stillwater or (even better) a USA Kilt.
He wants a kilt. Not a MUG. Be proud that the lad is starting out on the traditional foot for God's sake!

Stillwater has a deal on an Economy Wool in Blackwatch at I think 99 dollars. It is a Pakistan made kilt if that is an issue. I have two of them and they fit nicely. They are of the same weight wool as his heavyweight but I think in a 5-6 yards instead of 8. You will do better to get one of these instead of acrylic. The other option is the PV kilts from USA kilts that many of the XMarkers wear.

There is another option, a hybrid kilt like this may be something to consider.

I agree with brewerpaul. If you can go with wool or P/V then he will be much happier than with acryllic. Longer lasting, better quality.

Another vote for a Blackwatch tartan kilt. Get him a nice one, but don't break the bank. He'll find his own style.
