GOS sporran question

Part of your 'bounce' issue may be the type of sporran you're wearing and how much you're loading into it. A Rob Roy sporran is basically a sack suspended by a loop on the back- there is no structure to the front 3/4 of the bag.

If you're loading it up with stuff you are going to have more free movement than with a firmer sporran.

The other thing you might try (as TOB mentioned) is a sporran strap instead of a chain. You'll get less wear on your kilt, and a strap doesn't have quite the free movement of all those independently rotating chain links.

Artificer - I do tend to carry a lot in this sporran. Keys, wallet, cell phone, and my can of Copenhagen. I did notice the bounce got less when my cell phone was removed. Can't Apple make a lighter weight iPhone?... I can probably move my iPhone to a shirt pocket when I wear them. I have put in an email concerning the "Carry all" Sporran in hopes to be able to add the kitchen sink in there for hand washing purposes...lol

Matt was saying that your sporran was at the right height. It is too, but I reckon that your kilt is probably a couple of inches too low.

When you're walking briskly, you can always slide the sporran to one side. That will eliminate most of the movement, and it may be more comfortable.

I'm not really an expert but, I'd like to share my opinion. I agree the others on two points; the kilt should be worn a little higher and a leather strap would be good way to wear the sporran.


That said, I think the sporran is at about the correct place relative to your body but not to the kilt. Usually, the sporran is worn below the belt with a two or three finger space between. If you had a belt on, the sporran would be right up against it. Wearing the kilt higher but, keeping the sporran where it is relative to your body would put it just about right.


Sporrans usually flap some when we walk (run or dance), no matter what, and that's something we have to get used to; the concern is where it flaps and how much. You certainly don't want to wear it so low that it's hitting you in the… um… ah… well you know what I mean. That would be uncomfortable and might make your voice higher.

Yes as a fellow GOS I would concur that the sporran is about the right height but the kilt does need to be hitched up an inch or two. The bounce could be due to the fact that we have very mobile stomachs, its just something that is unavoidable, if its the drumming effect of the tassles you could always remove them.

I'm new to wearing kilts and to the site. Not sure if i'm wearing my sporran in the correct place. I never wear a belt so can't use that as a guide. I've set the belt so that the sporran rests over my "area" (if you get my drift). it doesn't bounce when i wear it, so much as swing side to side. only thing i'm worried about is that the swing will break the chain. Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated
