GOS sporran question
GOS, I bid to ask a question concerning sporran bounce. Below is a picture of where I wear my sporran. I have recently given up sporran hangers and went to a chain. When I walk, I get quite a bit of bounce in my sporran. My question is this....am I wearing my sporran too low or wearing my kilt too low? The bounce is an annoyance and a distraction while walking. I don't usually wear a belt so the chain is the only thing around me. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

This is just an opinion so take it for what it is...
I think that perhaps your chain is too small. I would try a strap (not a chain) one size larger. I would also wear the kilt higher (showing knees).
I have noticed that those two things (for me) keep my sporran in the right place with minimal bounce. There will always be some bounce. Minimising it is key.
Btw, that's a nice sporran. I hace recently begun to appreciate the Rob Roy type.

I don't think your sporran looks too high. Looks just right to me. I think GOS look better when wearing their sporran at that height. You don't want to wear it so low that is slips down below your belly. I have seen GOS doing just that and it interferes with the drape of the front of the kilt and accentuates your belly in a very unflattering way.
Worn at a good height, as you are doing, the sporran should stay in place and not move around too much. It could be that the slight bounce you are getting is just the natural movement of the sporran.

Part of your 'bounce' issue may be the type of sporran you're wearing and how much you're loading into it. A Rob Roy sporran is basically a sack suspended by a loop on the back- there is no structure to the front 3/4 of the bag.
If you're loading it up with stuff you are going to have more free movement than with a firmer sporran.
The other thing you might try (as TOB mentioned) is a sporran strap instead of a chain. You'll get less wear on your kilt, and a strap doesn't have quite the free movement of all those independently rotating chain links.

Thanks guys. I am going to look for a belt instead of a chain.
Thanks Matt, it's good to know that I'm wearing it at the right height. It always makes me wonder when I put it on whether or not it's too high or too low.
Artificer - I do tend to carry a lot in this sporran. Keys, wallet, cell phone, and my can of Copenhagen. I did notice the bounce got less when my cell phone was removed. Can't Apple make a lighter weight iPhone?... I can probably move my iPhone to a shirt pocket when I wear them. I have put in an email concerning the "Carry all" Sporran in hopes to be able to add the kitchen sink in there for hand washing purposes...lol
Thanks again guys for your responses and big time assistance.

Yeah. Cell phone on vibrate. Robes over kilt. Standing at the altar in the middle of chanting the eucharistic prayer and somebody phones me. Buzz-z-z-z-z. Not that anybody could hear it, but I could feel it. Boy, could I feel it!

Matt was saying that your sporran was at the right height. It is too, but I reckon that your kilt is probably a couple of inches too low.

When you're walking briskly, you can always slide the sporran to one side. That will eliminate most of the movement, and it may be more comfortable.

Teàrlach,
I'm not really an expert but, I'd like to share my opinion. I agree the others on two points; the kilt should be worn a little higher and a leather strap would be good way to wear the sporran.
That said, I think the sporran is at about the correct place relative to your body but not to the kilt. Usually, the sporran is worn below the belt with a two or three finger space between. If you had a belt on, the sporran would be right up against it. Wearing the kilt higher but, keeping the sporran where it is relative to your body would put it just about right.
Sporrans usually flap some when we walk (run or dance), no matter what, and that's something we have to get used to; the concern is where it flaps and how much. You certainly don't want to wear it so low that it's hitting you in the… um… ah… well you know what I mean. That would be uncomfortable and might make your voice higher.
