I agree with the comments/fantastic points of Dale, Sandy, David and Tobus on this one. However, if your heart is absolutely set on charcoal tweed, then go with that. There are a variety of charcoal tweeds out there that instead of being a rather boring, solid colour of charcoal, have subtle patterns - whether it's a herringbone, window pane, thornproof, or houndstooth pattern, I think they would all look quite smart with your tartan and add a wee bit of character to the tweed itself.

I really like the look of brownish tweeds with the green of the Maclean hunting tartan. Sir Lachlan Hector Charles Maclean, 12th Baronet of Duart and Morvern, CVO, DL, the 28th chief of Clan Maclean, wears a brown day jacket and waistcoat with his kilt and always look outstanding. I think that a brownish coloured tweed is most suitable for a "do all" tweed jacket. You tend to always see charcoal (and the common Lovat blue and green colours) tweeds out and about at gatherings and games, but how often do you see brown based tweeds? Check out the photos of Sir Lachlan below.

    Best of luck!
