    Thank you!

Thanks Everyone! I just bought my first kilt a second ago (Mackenzie sports kilt with sewn down pleads and pockets, thought that Mackenzie would be appropriate because of my MacRae heritage). Anyway, I now plan on wearing my kilt to school. The administration is cool, and I am nothing if not confident. I will plan on bringing basketball shorts for PE now. One last question, commando or underwear, and how tough is it to sit without flashing everyone in front of you?

Retired school principal here. Flash 'em once and you're dead meat. Wear the black breechclout.

Yup. Given the general maturity you'll find in school I'm willing to bet you'll get your pleats lifted more than once. Black boxers or similar will prevent both intentional (mischievous) and unintentional exposure.
It's not too hard to sit without flashing others, a sporran helps keep your aprons down. Practice sweeping your pleats so that you're sitting ON your kilt. Then you should be good to go.

Welcome to Xmarks from the highlands of Central Massachusetts. It is great that you are exploring this. My daughter and I wore kilts to her graduation last week.

As Artificer has said, practice A LOT well before going to school in sitting situations that mimic your seating type at school. Those little desk/chair combos common in school will require a different process to get in and out of than a regular dining room chair. In addition, your sport kilt is considerably lighter weight, and thus MUCH more prone to the effects of wind, than a 16oz wool kilt. If it starts to rise up, slap you arms straight down at your sides, don't flail about trying to push the aprons and pleats down with each hand. If you hold the sides down tight the front and back will take care of themselves.

    Wear it with pride!

You've received lots of good advice on dealing with the school, friends and "the question". Good luck with your kilt wearing, hope it turns out positively for you.

Hi Liam, and welcome to X Marks. You jumped right in (and that's fine) and have discovered the value of this forum; good people and good advice.

Wearing your kilt to school is great but, please wear something under it. "Flash 'em once and you're dead meat." Father Bill is right, it's cool enough to be wearing a kilt. It might seem 'cool' to go commando (will certainly feel cool) but, it's not.

No matter what is worn (or not) under the kilt, it's still worth practicing how to sit in one because, modesty is always appropriate in mixed situations. Also, managing your kilt when you sit (or get in a car, slide in a booth, etc.) helps prevent wrinkles and odd creases in your pleats.

    Have fun,
    Nile

Absolutely right. And as far as sitting down goes, you may find this YouTube clip helpful:

I went my entire senior year in historical reenactment garb of various periods. No weapons, but I carried a pen in a dagger scabbard. There were no kilts in that line up since none of the periods I portrayed would have allowed their use. But the things to be mindful of is as stated above, the possible disruption of the educational process (my argument was that it enhanced it due to it's historical nature), the code that is universal to most all schools is the proper undergarments, and length. Skirt/ short length was always a big issue at my school (never for me since all I wore was trouser derivatives), and I presume that kilt length would get thrown into that list. But here's to you.
Keep your rings charged, pleats in the back, and stay geeky!
