My guess would be that the hose were simply made to have a minimal turnover seeing the overall length/height about right - then again if you look at other old photos of a similar nature and of MacLeay's Highlanders, you tend to see hose worn very high up on the leg, or well below the knee. Perhaps just enough turnover to hide the garters underneath? As you stated Scott, they could also be hose that were either borrowed or handed down. I'm not so sure he outgrew them, since the height looks pretty good - quite a traditional height for kilt hose.

    Cheers,
But they wouldn't be if they had a normal turn over. They would be too short. I had a pair of hose like this once. They were pure wool and they shrunk on me. I'm pretty sure this photo pre-dates clothes dryers though.

Well, that's certainly true Nathan. However, I tend to think a "normal" turnover can be rather subjective, as we have seen from time to time that some kilt hose have just enough turnover to cover the width of the garters (diced regimental hose for instance) and maybe a bit more, whilst others have a 3-4 inch turnover. To my eye, the latter looks much more aesthetically pleasing and is arguably what "we" consider to be the standard for most kilt hose, especially for Argyll style tartan hose.

Perhaps the chap's hose did shrink somehow?!

Hahaha! I noticed that too. I keep seeing this wee, black triangle with an exclamation point in it. Are we going back to "plus one's"

you only get 5 "ayes" per day. Once you use them up all you see is the "report thread" button.

I'm not sure what time zone the "Ayes" refresh in because I haven't used 5 today.

If the hose had shrunk as much as they appear to have shrunk, then they must have been knitted for 25 or 30-inch calves, to have shrunk down to fit this chap so well. Or, they were his grandfather's hose, and his grandfather was a wee little man. Like Zacchaeus.
My guess is they were knitted the size you see in the picture. My other guess is that the knitter used a marled yarn, in which two different colors (here light and dark) are plied together, and the black rakers were knitted in as the sock was made, or else embroidered on (called "duplicate stitch") after the sock was finished.

    Kyle , perhaps this is an example where " old school " wins out . The " Ayes " have limitations , but the traditional " Kyle plus ones " keep going and going ! + 1 , + 1 , + 1 , + 1 , + 1 , + 1 , there you go , that's more than five .

    Cheers , Mike

I think the "aye" was limited so that we can use the feature , yet not to the exclusion of other contributions.
