Hmm...some excellent advice here, gentlemen. Thank you very much for your insight.
I am quite happy with my current kilt from USA Kilts and the shipping/duty-free aspect is quite attractive.
I must give this more thought and weight my options.
Much obliged, folks.

I really, really like Matt's kilts but I think that they might be a bit out of my price range.

I do. You'd want to discuss pleating options (to sett, to whatever stripe, etc.) directly with Matt, but you can see mine right beside the 6-yard Douglas Modern he made for me here.

Thanks Dale, those look pretty cool. I was wondering about the pleating I saw on one of Barb T's post about pleating to no stripe. How that would look in the weathered.

Both makers offer great quality kilts. I have a few of Rocky's in my stable and one of my main "go to" kilts is a custom, 8 yard, 16 oz, hand sewn from USAK. It's an amazing piece and worth every bit. You won't be let down by kilt from USA Kilts.
It seems like you're looking to "step up" to something nicer than your P/V kilts but not necessarily prepared for a tank just yet? Since you're in CA, you might consider looking into a somewhat local maker in Sacramento. I'm speaking of Joshua Brown of Skye Highland Outfitters. http://www.skyehighlandoutfitters.com/ Josh makes many styles of kilts, of comparable quality and construction, at competitive pricing.

Thanks, CDarwin. I really like my current USA Kilts Holyrood. You are correct. Looking to step up into something more appropriate for all occasions. I would like an 8-yard tank but that much fabric is pretty intense. I'm usually pretty warm all-year 'round.
16oz might be okay if it's a lower-yardage garment but 8-yards of 16oz just might be impractical the more I research and experiment with my current P/V kilt (which is about 11oz and about 5-yards).
Perhaps 13oz, 5-yards might be more practical. I seldom attend events with a dress code requiring more than business/business casual dress. While I realise that it is easier to dress a tank down than a casual kilt up I am weighing the practicality against the 'would-be-nice' factors.
As an aside, I REALLY, REALLY like Strathmore's super, deep, dark colours. I see that they typically only weave light and medium weight tartan. If I have my new kilt built in 5-yards of 13oz I know that my swish will be more modest but it will still be a significant step up from my P/V, correct?
Thanks for your patience and guidence, folks. I really appreciate it. Rome wasn't built in a day and neither will my Highland wardrobe. I don't kilt up as often as a lot of the guys on here but when I do I do it with respect and look good.

You wouldn't notice any significant temperature difference, at 5 yards, between 13- and 16-oz fabric, so I'd strongly recommend going for the heavier weight tartan.

I currently have four 5-yard wool kilts from USAK, 3 in 16-oz fabric and one 13-oz; and five 6-yard kilts in heavyweight fabric from New House Highland. I don't wear any others. And I can tell you with the utmost confidence that, were I to wear any of them at the most formal of Scottish events, no one would notice that I was not wearing an 8-yard "tank".
