You might enjoy seeing a picture of The MacGregor in his wedding clothes, along with some discussion of MacGregor tartans, neatly consolidated on Matt Newsome's blog page here: http://blog.albanach.org/2006/05/macgregor-tartans.html

In my "newby introduction" post I commented on just this point --
that I had mistakenly purchased my first kilt in "MacGregor Hunting
    Ancient"
-- The colour is nice and I'll continue to wear it, but
I'm definitely moving to MacGregor modern for the most part for
    future purchases.

If I may, without hijacking the thread, what are the thoughts about
ancient/weathered tartan colourings? The MacGregor does not
seem to have much time for them. But, alternatively I ran into
a Scottish born MacGregor in full Prince Charlie kit at this year's
Aussie National Folk Festival. (He'd been to the Heritage Ball)
And he was wearing a MacGregor Ancient tartan. So clearly they
are being worn, and by Scotts.

Thanks for taking the time to talk.

Ancient and weathered colors are acceptable alternatives to the usual modern colors. It's just a matter of personal taste. Sir Malcolm MacGregor frequently wears the MacGregor tartan in ancient colors.

    Thank you,

If he wears it, then it must be OK...

I had wondered about that, but the comments that I read and
you quoted were more than a little ambiguous on that point.

I personally like the ancient or weathered colours, though
the modern colours are also OK.

Well, that's cleared up, at least. (Damn, there may be yet
another kilt or two in my future. ;-)
