    I suppose it was one of those good ideas at the time that with the benefit of hindsight turned out to be a poor, or at least unhelpful, decision for those following?

    Spot on, Jock. I've seen many a regimental flag from the American Civil War that was missing pieces; the veterans would frequently cut stars, etc. and give them away at regimental reunions, etc.
