Wool, silk, whatever, of course, why not? I really do think that you are giving this altogether too much thought!

I just wear whatever tie happens to strike my fancy and never give a thought to what material it is made of.

Chacun à son goût. Surely one of the purposes of this site is to give sartorial matters some thought. As I mentioned, I didn't say the tie had to be wool but I did suggest it as a nice complimentary touch. There is not one type of tie that I think is "right" but their are some ties in my collection I would never wear with my Highland attire.

The only decision that ever comes to my mind , as far as chosing a tie for the day is, "do I like it"? If I do, I wear it. If I don't , then well, I don't.

Clearly, but do you not find any thematic commonality among to the ties you like or don't like with your Highland attire? I think I've heard you mention Regimental and club ties in the past. Might I suggest that a hot pink satin tie or polyester would be a less than ideal choice?
If you feel there's no value in exploring neckwear choices, fair enough, but it is a subject I've given some thought and figured I'd share my opinion with "the great rabble".
I tend to find that the ties I own and like with Highland attire tend to fall into a few categories. I've also seem people proudly wearing ties that I thought were a poor choice that just didn't compliment the overall look. In my view, it's useful to suggest a few "can't go wrong" options for folks with the understanding that they can certainly be more daring if they so choose.

Nathan.
I have more than a few ties, club/college/regimental/school ties with colour combinations that match very little, plus assorted plain wool and silk ones, dotted ones etc., and I will happily wear them with a suit, sports jacket, shooting suits, blazer, highland attire, with/without a pullover etc. without a second thought . Its really something that we(I don't mean this as a class thing[although perhaps it is too], more perhaps, an upbringing thing) in the UK grow up with. Its probably an age thing as well. Its second nature for many. I will admit to having favorites though.

I too, have over my 60 years acquired quite a collection of ties - different widths, different materials, and different patterns. (If you live long enough all ties will come back in style.) Some match or contrast better with my kilts, and some not well at all. I generally prefer ties of a medium width when kilted (although with a waist coat or sweater it doesn't much matter). I have one tie dating back to when I was 13 or 14 that is wool in lovat green that I often wear with one of my kilts. I tend to wear ties much less than I used to 35 or 40 years ago, when it was jacket and tie every day for work. Now it is just when I am attending and event or function or going out for a special dinner. Our world has become much more casual.

I have some knit wool ties from House of Cheviot that I like to wear with my tweed jackets in the fall and winter (and sometimes spring and summer!).

I also have a few plain colored woven wool ties (all Lochcarron made, I think) that tend to get a lot of wear with my kilts. A light blue one, a brown, and a light red that goes well with some of my weathered tartans.

Just a quick observation.
Non-tartan wool ties are getting harder and harder to find in the UK.
In a specialist gentleman's outfitter, certainly. Anywhere else, not to be found.
