    Hey guys thanks for your replies.

    I still would contradict but for not wanting to provoke heartattacks on my incorrect views I don't. But seems as if I read the wrong books about the topic...

    About the garters? Whats wrong with them...simple wool self tie garters...!?

    @Kyle: Thanks Kyle for your advice. But as far as I am informed also an Argyll needs dress hose for evening events...

    Cheers, Tom. One could certainly wear solid coloured hose for formal events too, though I would argue most men choose Argyll style tartan hose, or diced. Red or claret seem to work particularly well. I also think much depends on the level of one's dress, the context of the event, and if there is a dress code (perhaps annotated in an invitation, etc).
