Cheers Rabble. Janet Steward does seem to offer exceptional value and I do like the look of the lapels on Downunder Kilt's waistcoat. . . and tweed in a noticeably different colour seems like a good idea as well. You're going to make me buy lots, aren't you?

Before pulling the trigger, see if you can get a couple of sample swatches in different colors. What may look good in the mind's eye or on a computer screen may not actually look quite as good in person.

I'm in exactly the same situation, having got a very nice used greenish tweed kilt jacket on Ebay, no waistcoat.

In The Highlanders of Scotland it can be seen that red waistcoats, and tartan waistcoats, were common with tweed.

I've been thinking about getting a Black Watch waistcoat, which I would wear with all of my kilts (none of which are Black Watch). Precedents are things like the old pipers' uniform in The Black Watch, consisting of a Black Watch tartan doublet worn with Royal Stewart kilt and plaid, and this startling but effective juxtaposition of tartans

Well, my jacket should be arriving today, so I'll have a better idea of what might look good. I really like the look of lapels and am thinking one in a dark grey tweed, of similar weight, or maybe lighter, than the jacket and then a burgundy or muted red moleskin as well - not sure about contrasting tartan though? I'll wait to see yours first Richard!

Steve: Whatever you decide, good luck. And, post some pics, so we can benefit from your experience.

I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

Stevie R , Lovat green , Lovat blue and some of the lighter tan tweed jackets generally all go well with most tartans .

A contrasting color waistcoat in the right color would look very smart .

I guess the next question is ..... what tartans would you be pairing with the waistcoat ?

The more neutral colors of the above mentioned jackets can handle a lot of contrasting solid colors regarding waistcoats , so the tartan of the kilt or kilts would be the next consideration .

Choose a waistcoat color that compliments the jacket and the tartan of the kilt or kilts . If you have several kilts , you can probably find a happy median on the waistcoat color that would be versatile with all your tartans .

Just food for thought . Good luck on your color selection !

    Cheers , Mike

I favour a dark green doeskin waistcoat with a Lovat blue jacket.

Well mate, you're obviously not the best turned out in the photo ;) but very smart none the less. I can catch a glimpse of your Robertson Hunting, Ancient colours and that is my choice of kilt as well. The dark green waistcoat sets of the jacket a treat. More food for thought for me!

Many years ago I used to wear a waist coat with a reversable mustard yellow (on one side) and tattersall (greamy/white background) pattern on the other. It worked pretty well, I thought, with my then kilt day attire and sports jacket too. Sadly, it shrank, as they do. However, I think I saw it being worn by a young kilted lad the other day and I thought he looked pretty sharp. Have a look in the Hunting(horses and hounds)/shooting/countrywear shops and websites you may strike lucky?
