Being a part-time kilt wearer, I find that any time I have one on, it is a pretty special occasion- church & funerals, mostly, and certainly not all of either. Like Colin, I acquired my argyle hose from a previous wearer and can treat them with the disdain I could never muster for footwear that costs more than a hundred dollars. As for over egging the cake and/or gilding the lily, I can only say,
sometimes too much ain't enough.
If I were to become incensed over some sartorial disagreement, or even offended, my prayer this sabbath is that it will be over something bigger than argyle hose. Like, I don't know, how many buttons are on some other gentleman's waistcoat or something of similar actual import. Or maybe one of those scrunchy things people wear where their ties belong...
