I would have to agree with the OP , Downunder and Bren . I have been a member for almost two years and just recently I noticed there is a time limit for editing .

In the past , I've been able to edit a post hours later and sometimes I've edited a day later . I'm not registering a complaint , just weighing in that I have also encountered this time limit for the first time just a short time ago .

    I'm sorry,

You folks are experiencing something which I have not noticed and did not know about until you brought it up.

I will need to do some checking and see if we did an update that may have changed something.

Please give me some time to look into this.

I just now experienced this too. When I edited (due to a typo) a post well after the 10 minute limit earlier today, I had no problem whatsoever. I have never encountered this before. Thanks for getting to the bottom of this, Steve.

    Cheers,

    OK Folks,

I don't know why the software suddenly decided to start keeping track of edit times.

I have gone into the admin Control Panel and manually edited the settings.

I have set no time limit to editing your own posts.

A 1 hour time limit to add a Poll to a thread.

And a 1 hour time limit to edit the title of your own thread.

If someone would like to check and confirm that these settings are working please.

Kyle, it seems you and I were typing at the same time. Are you saying that you could edit a post older than ten min. just this morning?

The change I posted about directly above took place as 0928 am PST today. Were you able to edit before that?

I'll volunteer to check the "no time limit" setting. In fact I'll use this post. It's a simple decidability problem, kind of like the halting problem. I'll get back to all of you after my Turing machine quits running.
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

Yes, since 0928 am PST was 1228 pm EST here in Cincinnati, and my actual editing of the post was prior to 1228 pm EST.

OK folks I have also heard from some other members about this issue.

The vBulletin software package we use is a large and very complex program. X Marks itself is highly customized on top of the base program.

It now appears that there is a glitch. The default time limits seem to effect some members and not others. I have no way of explaining this glitch. I am not a programmer so I can't even start to look for it within the code.

What I have done is manually set the time limit on editing your own posts to 0. This should, and I must emphasis should until we have confirmation, disable the time limit on editing posts.
I have also manually set the time limit on editing your own thread title to 0.

If you look through some of our early FAQ's you will see that even in the early days of the forum we did not know that this setting was available. We used to think that only a member of staff could edit a thread title.

This made it cumbersome in some forum sections like For Sale. i.e. if an item offered for sale were actually sold the member had to contact the staff. Now, I hope, a member should be able to edit the thread title and note "Sold". The staff upon seeing this, will know that the thread may be cleaned up.

This should also makes it more convenient if a member makes a typo in a thread title. They should now be able to edit and correct the typo without having to contact a member of staff to do that for him.

We have always maintained that the OP (Original Poster) or person who starts a thread, is the owner of that thread. The OP should have full control over the threads they start. They should be able to edit their own titles.

I am going to ask our members to experiment a bit. If some of you with editing problems would attempt to edit some of your old posts and/or thread titles and report back it would be a big help.

Just edited my post of yesterday in this thread Steve and the new setting seems to be working well. Thank you.

Also just edited a post of a month ago, thanks again
