A number of Norwegian Vikings came to settle in Scotland, particularly in the western isles and in the far north of Scotland. They became assimilated into the Scottish landscape but originally clans such as, for example, Macleod (Leod was a son of Olaf the Black, a Norse king), McIver (Ivar was a Norse personal name) and MacDonald were descended from Vikings. And a number of Norman and Flemish nobles were granted land in the Highlands in the 14th century, resulting in the establishment of, for example, the Camerons, Frasers, Chisholms, Menzies and Grants. Of course, within a few generations they were as much a part of the Highland scene as the clans who had been there for centuries before.

As for the Norwegian traditional costume materials, it's as easy as tracking them down under their name. It's easier to look for YOUR family association with the clans. For instance "SWANSON" wears the "GUNN" tartan.

Give us a list of the family names, or the specific Norwegian plaids that you're looking for, and it can be searched.

    Glad to help if possible.

Jimmy, you're just a fountain of information.

The family name is Texley. I believe it's Teksle still back in Norway. Apparantly, there's a whole mountain range called the Teksletofts in the area where the family is from. Also some counties, Upper Teksle, Middle and Lower, I think. My grandfather goes to Norway every five or six years. They treat him like a long lost son when he's in town. I would love to go some day.

    Normans & Vikings...

Aye, Jimmy, my Cumming/Comyn ancestors get their name from the Norman love of puns -- the "first" Cumming, Robert de Comines, came from the village of Comines on the Belgian/French border -- hence, Cummin, then later Comyn and Cumming.

The Gunns supposedly get their name from a Norseman named "Gunnar".

    Cheers,

    T.

From what I have the Gunn clan stems from the 2nd son of Olaf the black "Gunni". Gunnar is a modern version Gunni ment War He Married Ragnhild sister of Harald Jarl of Orkney.

The delay in THIS response was due to the time it took to go through all the information that was available. Tracking anything that would help with this name was non-existant. Fun... but non-existant... atleast as far as a Scottish, Irish or Welsh connection in any way.

MAN, there's a LOAD of information out there!

Having Norwegian ancestry, I wish I could help, but I haven't been able to find anything else on Norwegian tartans. There's very little info on my family name, even in Norway, so I decided to come up with the family tartan on my own. Hopefully this will turn into a tradition with my offspring.

That's a pretty good idea, philbo. I dont think the wife and I will be having kids. Just doesn't seem to be in our "plan". (Like you can plan on a thing like that)

So ours would be a short lived tartan.

Luckily, my dad was able to uncover some Irish family names that I wasn't aware of before. I may go that route.

My aunt on my mother's side is going to try to track the Norwegian family to the county of their origin so I can see if there's a county tartan from that area.
