Which tartan for MacClive?

Okay, this quote above confuses me a bit more. Is the Scottish Tartans Authority to be trusted when they show MacClive being Stewart of Appin or not?

Is there a way to contact the Scottish Tartans Authority and see where they get the link from?

Sorry, I'm really not trying to be difficult.

The Scottish Tartans Authority tells you right at the point of search to be careful trusting the results of the surname search. Let me quote their page (bold mine):

"IMPORTANT NOTES
Caveat Emptor. Tartan research has never been an exact science and even though the Tartan Ferret uses the most authoritative source in the world - the STA's International Tartan Index - there are bound to be errors and omissions. If you come across such or you can provide further information on a tartan to enhance the historical record, please do contact us We must also point out that reliance on any information supplied on tartans in the ITI is, in line with our Terms & Conditions, entirely at your own risk."

When I clicked on the terms and conditions, I came across this one that was relevant, again - bold mine.

"Accuracy of Website Information
19. The Website Information is provided "as is" and we make no representation, endorsement or warranty as to its accuracy. We will not be liable for any action taken (or not taken) in reliance upon the Website Information and such action is taken entirely at your own risk. Yeah, I found that site years ago and sent some emails but there hasn't been any answers or action on that site in many years.

The stuff on this website is probably the result of your enquiry but perhaps not. The "Mac" who runs this website also claims McClive is an official sept of Stewart of Appin. I'm not sure who he is though.

Yeah, that was the very first site in all the years of searching, mostly the internet, that I have found anything.

Just for some background; my dad died back in 1995 and died while homeless and pretty much a hopeless alcoholic and insane. Needless to say I didn't have much contact with him at the time. I didn't even meet him until I was around 7 and then really only saw him here and there over the next 12 years or so.

I lost touch with my grandmother McClive when I was 17 or so and lost contact with her due to my uncle and my mom hating each other and him keeping her from talking to me due to his worrying he would have to deal with my crazy mother and my father's problems at the time.

So, this is the reason I don't have much to go on.

The reason I'd like to honor that side is that as you, my understanding has always been that that is how it is done. Plus I did have lots of contact with my grandmother from a young age and by her account my Grandfather was a hell of a man and loved by all.

A lot of Irish references say MacClave is a variation of Mac Flaitheamh or Mac Laithimh (These are both pronounced MacClave. In the North of Ireland Mac Flaitheamh is rendered as MacClave and in the south it is rendered as Claffey or MacClaffey. Anotehr variation is MacLevy.

It is just as possible that MacClive is a variation of this name as it is that it is a variation of Dunnshleibhe (Dunlevy, MacLeave, Livingston, MacLeay).

Based on phone books and Facebook searching, I think the biggest pocket of MacClives on earth is actually in Michigan. There are also some in West Africa which may provide a clue.
