Not a thistle but a grenade on the buttons, which look to be tunic buttons from the uniform of The Grenadier Guards, the senior regiment of the Guards Division. Not sure how they got on your tunic though. The squiggly things are the letters ER and ER mirrored (for Elizabeth Regina).

The "ink stamp" appears to be where a rank badge such as a crown or "pip" was removed. My guess is that this jacket belonged to a junior officer.

I also noticed that the front of the jacket is cut away and the label is marked "Scottish Regiments". I have a couple of bush jackets and none are cut away like this one.


In Canada, we briefly experimented with a uniform called Khaki Drill in the 50s / early 60s before dropping it. This jacket looks like an early-60s highland version.

The grenade on the buttons could also mean Guards. The mirrored Royal Cipher is also typical of the Guards. I would therefore hazard a guess that this is a khaki drill jacket from a Scottish Guards junior officer from the early 60s.

Someone with more knowledge of the UK Scottish regiments could likely point you in the right direction.
