1st attempt at a sporran bag, for MOD brass cantle

( with many thanks to Artificer, for inspiration)
My first attempt. Learned a lot, and if I can make notes soon enough, maybe the next one will be an improvement.

Well done mate. Might I ask what you used to stiffen the leather where it attaches to the cantle - and what type of fastening to actually attach the bag on the lugs?

I used sew-on snaps ("female" half only, as the welded in posts act as the "male" half). Used an arc of thicker leather, between lining and bag, which I sewed the sew-on snaps to:

This is not the first sporran I've made, but the first for one of these brass cantles. With the sew-on snaps, one could make any number of different bags, to use with the brass cantle.

Very neat. My sporran still needs lining and a piece of tweed is in the post somewhere. I shall be following your method when it arrives.

Following a previous post by Artificer, I used Dritz Sew-On Snaps, size 10/21mm, brass snaps. Unfortunately, I could not find a way to purchase only the "female" half of the snaps, even from Dritz/Prym.

Looks great to me. I really like the color of the leather. Might have to see about getting ahold of one of those cantles.

I used elk skin, from Tandys, for the outer bag, & red pigskin suede, for the inner bag/lining.

Good looking bag you have made there, love the colour. Just a point, I don't know if it has been noted before, the original MoD bags had a piece of cardboard, about 2-3mm thick, 20mm wide and 170mm long that kept the shape at the bottom and lower sides of the bag. It was slid between the the front and rear facings along the gussett. I have had a number of bags made for me and use a plastice stip cut from the lid a 4 litre icream container. Of course the width dimensions may differ depending on how wide your gussett is. Cheers and well done, look forward to seeing more of your work.
