kilt pins that are to heavy I may have a good solution if it wasn't already addressed

Hi ! One of my friends gave me a pin for my kilts for a bday gift last week. Its pretty, but it is heavier then normal pins..I dont' want the pin to pull down to much ..Well either way I didn't want to be mean and not wear it.. So I had a couple of choices, I could pin it to my Balmoral Hat or use my husband and twin sis advice.. I have a swatch of one of my kilts, so I folded it into a thicker rectangle and stitched it so it will be forever that thick... Well it seemed to work. The pin didn't hang forward and it seemed to take alot of slack off, so I felt comfortable and confident that all my kilts will be safe.. It didn't look odd, u couldn't even tell something was behind the apron part... So this may help all of you nice Gentleman and Ladies IF u receive a slightly heavier pin ..... IF THIS WAS ALREADY ADDRESSED I'm sorry I didn't see it ........ Angie

    Sounds like an ingenious solution!

I myself haven't worn kilt pins in years due to laziness and not wanting to deal with various problems they create.

OC Richard, Thank u .. So far I have been lucky not to have a problem w kilt pins ( knock on wood ) & I hope it continues that way...I do try to be careful and be aware.. When my husband and twin sis came up with the idea I had to try and so I did and it worked.. I rather not keep wearing heavier pins but if the occasion comes up, at least they won't hurt my kilts..... Thank u again .. Angie

The trouble with kilt pins, and being a piper, is that sometimes you have to march through crowded venues while playing, sometimes having to shove your way through between seated guests. This is invariably when the kilt pin gets caught on a chair (or a person!) and the tug on the kilt pin enlarges the holes in the kilt or sometimes rips the fabric.

As I've said before, anybody who has sorted through piles of decades-old band kilts from bands that wore kilt pins will have seen the damage in kilt after kilt. Sometimes half the kilts are damaged, sometimes nearly all. The kilts worn by the drummers are the worse, because oftentimes when they unhook their drums to set them down part of the drum snags on the kilt pin.

But when you sort through piles of kilts from bands that didn't wear kilt pins the kilts are in great shape.

So I ask myself, is it worth it? My answer is no.
