If you're looking to get a kilt that you can dress up with and will last you a long while, I highly recommend an 8 yard 16 oz kilt - preferably in your family tartan, if applicable. It will never go out of style.
My father's mother was a Graham, but it's my understanding you only go with the male line, in which case, I don't have a family tartan. I wish I had a simple answer to "get the family tartan." It would certainly make decisions easier. Probably the closest I come is the Field Artillery tartan, which is a bit of a special order.
