Thank you Jack Daw, for letting us know that they got one item correct in the "Hot Scots" movie by using a McIntyre lass. She was a cutie in my eye.

One of my pasttimes is to root out the McIntyres, where ever they may be.

Thanks for reminding me about that movie, it's been decades since I've seen it. I know tastes vary but I always find them hilarious.

Note the director is Hugh McCollum and the art director is Harold MacArthur... some Scots 'behind the camera' perhaps.

Having grown up watching the likes of the Stooges, Keystone Kops, Stan and Ollie, and Bud and Lou I've gotten an appreciation for good old slap schtick. Had to find the Hot Scots and watch it the other night. Though Jennifer likes the comedy she doesnt really care for the violence. Well that is just part of being a Stooge. After looking very closely at the outfits I noticed a couple of things. The did seem to be wearing a real kilt but from there it was Stoogified. Larry, always being the semi normal guy, seemed to have his on the most proper with the apron in the front. I looked quite close to make sure it wasnt just a fully pleated skirt type thing and it did look like an apron. Moe had his turned about 90 degrees on his right hip. Shem was the one with the kilt fully backwards along with the sporran. This is the Stoogification of the kilts that I would expect, not some mistake on costuming. In other shorts they have even more outrageous kilt outfits from short skirt kilt on Curly to long dress like kilt on Larry..... Well after all they are Stooges. Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk......

    Brewerpaul,

You have much better eyesight than I do. I looked and looked and could not get all those details. Thanks for the help.

I reckon it's because of the vaudeville characterization of Scots as being "mean"…frugal to the point of obsessiveness. "Cheap" would be the most common way to describe the image. It was done for comedy purposes…somewhere out there you'll find Bugs Bunny cartoons where the comic Scotsman figure opens his purse and moths fly out suggesting that the opening of the purse is such a rare event that moths have had time in the dark to proliferate.

…as we all know, this is strictly untrue and is yet another stereotype from a time when such things were somewhat more socially acceptable than they are in the enlightened times that we now live in…it does have it's roots in vaudeville where almost every ethnic group got lampooned…think Chico Marx's portrayal of an Italian and you get the gist of it. If you're a theatre major (lord have mercy on you), you know that this sort of caricaturing goes back to the Ancient Greek Theatre. I always argue that this sort of thing was done mainly for a cheap laugh and was generally not done out of malice but we probably all agree that it's out of place these days.

I really don't expect to see cobwebs on anybody's bottle of "the Scots Broth" nowadays….

    Best,

    AA

Here in My Bunny Lies Over The Sea (1948) the Scottish guy runs and retrieves his bullet after missing Bugs Bunny ("it's been in the family for years"). I love this cartoon! Especially the bagpipes, and Bugs Bunny's show-stopping hybrid bagpipe-jazz band thing at the very end.
