Both the Stillwater black nylon sporran and the Carry All from Freedom Kilts are excellent for toting a load. I have and use both. However, as advised, beware of too heavy a sporran, else things get kinky.

The Woman gave me a front pocket wallet for Christmas. Now I'm using it all the time, it's so much more convenient than a bulky billfold for a back pocket. I don't carry more than three keys at a time. My cell phone is medium sized. All I really need to add for sporran management is a coin purse of some sort, nothing big or heavy. With that as a basic load, a small sporran will do. The first mentioned sporrans would allow you to carry in addition things like business cards, thumb drives, pipe an tobacco and such, but if you can do with out them, do.

Ok, so I have some good options towards finding a better sporran. Thanks ever so much for the input. Now if I might be so bold I have 2 more questions to ask of you. First: What are your opinions on the "Great Kilt" as it is known, and Second: Is this the appropriate place to ask for advice such as I have?

Great place to add questions. My opinion: the Great Kilt is historical, not for contemporary business or casual wear. There will be many others who will disagree with me, and of course there will be those who will say "It's a free country; do as you wish," but it's simply not the norm. Great for historical re-enactors or for fun, but that's a lot of $$ for fun.

This is indeed the correct place to ask questions, but in my experience there are rarely "new" questions. I would encourage you to search this web site, and to even google your questions and look for the Xmarks links, then seek clarification in a new post.
I would agree with Father Bill regarding the Great Kilt. I have one, but it is really more of a costume, than contemporary wear.
    Cheers

    Hello Big McDaniel,

I actually seldom put much in my sporran. I have two kilts from Freedom Kilts that have trouser-esque pockets that hold all my stuff. Also, when kilted I am often wearing a kilt jacket. I tend to carry stuff in my jacket pockets more than my sporran.

    Hi Mikilt,

I've heard about having pockets in a kilt, and I was under the impression that was a big no-no. Am I mistaken?

Do you mean great kilt or the 8yd traditional. Just asking to clarify so that we get responses aligned.
Back to the sporran. I have also seen (should have bought) the carry-all sporran. There are a few options regarding colour and such. Well worth a look at Freedom kilts, methinks. As others have mentioned also, Freedom and USAK have kilts with pockets. Until I'd seen it at Freedom I wouldn't have imagined it possible. Couldn't even tell all those keys and other items were there. Might be worth looking into for yourself.

    Taskr,

I was specifically asking about the great kilt.

As much as I'd appreciate the practicality, I don't care for the look of cargo pockets on a kilt. The thing I love about my kilts from Freedom Kilts is that the slash pockets are virtually invisible to the casual observer. Unless my hand is in my pocket, no one knows the pockets are there.

    YMMV

I too found the sporran small in size, but then I normally wear a jacket in saxon clothing, so in kilts I will also wear a jacket and they have pockets!!
SWMBO is currently modifying a saxon tweed jacket for me.
