Lovat blue, lovat green, claret/dark red. Probably Lewis hose from House of Cheviot.

How is he going to wear the kilt? If he is mostly dressing down, argyle in my opinion would not be appropriate. I love argyle and diced hose for formal wear though.
Also, what is his tartan? Does he want to match or complement?

Black, but then I have only one kilt at the moment and that's black Stewart they go together.

You might consider House of Cheviot Lewis hose in charcoal. Goes with anything and is less harsh than black. Provides some contrast between the hose and black shoes, as well. Pair them with garter ties that match or complement a bright color in your kilt.

My go to hose are charcoal grey or a burgundy/maroon. If you need to brighten up a bit the lovat green is always nice too.

My first pair was charcoal grey, lovat blue was next, then the green. I already had black but now wear them seldom. Flashes are his answer to variety until his hose collection expands. The price for flashes is better as a limited budget option.

Yeah, well... All comedy aside, white (like black or charcoal) goes with just about anything. So if I were to only get one and ONLY one pair of hose... It would serve many functions. Including annoying all those who despise white hose! Lol!
