Old news
It's surprising that the Telegraph has produced such an out-dated article. Short of news, or are its reporters all away on their summer holidays?

All rental kilt should pass a "Black Light" test at time of pickup and return. Ron you are spot on to keep the spots off.

Ewwww. (I admit to wondering who may've worn my band kilt before me. I am trying not to think about it too hard.) Funny that they use a picture of dancers in the article, though... when the SOBHD is specific enough to even have rules on what color of undergarment you may wear under your kilt.
I'm still trying to figure out how anyone can stand wool next to a lot of sensitive parts!

From what I've seen of people renting property in Spain, I very much doubt people would treat a rented kilt with any more respect.

Military Issue kilts.
Soldiers were told to sew linen panel inside new issue kilt. All worn and returned kilts were burnt by the Q.m. stores.Makes sense. So does underkilts and cleaning for returned hire kilts. Roderick Powell

In the old days, unless one was rich enough to afford linen/cotton, all garments worn next the skin would have been woollen. Certainly, when I was young (especially in winter), vests(undershirts) were made of wool. And, as has been discussed in the following threads, tartan undertrews for the kilt were the norm until the late 30s.

Hm, interesting. So it seems, the prophylactic is a traditionally common issue, and the lack of, is the fault of the company hiring out...
