Yes it is possible. In the region where I live, I frequently meet people who have never heard of a kilt. Many have never even heard of Scotland. I have also found, many of these friendly folks are from lands outside the U.S.

I have only worn my band kilt so far, but I have gotten the drunk guy begging for a picture with me at a gas station, numerous people (mostly women) telling me how good the kilt looks, and A LOT of the "what's under your kilt?"

The first few time I wore my uniform I made sure I was in complete uniform if I needed to stop and get something at a store; however, now I'm usually in the kilt and tee shirt, sans horse hair sporran. Get a few looks, but no longer care.

People in the U.S. like to find reasons to poke fun at things they don't understand, are different, or are afraid to do themselves. And a lot of "manly" tough guys think bullying or putting other people down makes them look better.

No, everyone in the USA does not know about kilts.

Personal belief is, there are darned few subjects about which, all Americans know ANYTHING AT ALL.

That so many Americans cannot name more than 15 states or correctly sequence; Plymouth Rock, Declaration of Independence, Louisiana Purchase, Emancipation Proclamation, Electric Light Bulb, Montana entering the Union, Prohibition, Pearl Harbor, Eisenhower's presidency, the Moon Landing and 9-11...

...kind of explains the saggy trousers and some Wal-Mart shoppers not "knowing about" kilts.

Interesting bit tho; allegedly, the new generation coming up in years is the most tolerant of other people's looks / lifestyles, ever to have been. Whether they will have any hard values at all, remains to be seen.

Which may mean they do not "know about kilts" but may be inclined to tolerance thereof, by "generational mores."

Tho this forum is not MENSA-associated, folks here do tend to be pretty hot stuff, experiences-wise, intellectually, knowledge-possessing, traveled, capable....

    A SHOT ACROSS THE BOW:

It's starting to sound angry, political, personal, and angry to me. Rules 2, 5, and 8 could all come quickly into play.

Let's back off, and take a moment to re-read the rules - all of them!

One of the issues is that some people have never see a Kilt or seen a kiltie wearing his Kilt. The chances of seeing another Kiltie are very small.
We accept wearing the Kilt as a way of life. People who spend their life in Walmart in their pajamas are unlikely to recognise that a gentleman is wearing a kilt. If a kiltie goes out with a partner in a pleated skirt some folks think the lady is wearing a Kilt and her male Partner is wearing a
skirt. I convinced someone that a lady who was wearing a pencil skirt was wearing a European version of a Figian male wrap over garment without the wrap over aprons but with a vent in the back. They considered the lady was wearing a kilt without any aprons, and considered I was wearing a skirt. I find the easiest thing to do is to ignore people who laugh at you and shout abuse, as I do not have the vocabulary to banter
with their bad manners and lack of education regarding popular current fashion trends. Roderick Powell

I generally avoid Wal-Mart if at all possible. I suppose it depends on where you live, some people know what a kilt is; others don't. I do, however, get tired of correcting people from calling it a "skirt" or hearing "what do you wear underneath" comments.

My Scottish friends call me Roddy so I will referee when you wrestle with customers in Walmart. Perhaps it is not worth the effort.
Fill the store up with customers, lock the door and throw away the key. Roderick.

No they might not. Why should they?
