First this interesting one showing what appears to be the top of an old church, possibly St Giles, Edinburgh. Can anyone help identify it? (EDIT: is this the Wallace Monument, Stirling?)
I've just joined and this is my first post! You may already have replies to this question, but I haven't been all the way through this thread yet, and I'm afraid I'll lose my place if I don't just answer now...
I think your pin is the top of St Giles in Edinburgh, perhaps with the very top part of the spire broken off. It's the wrong shape for the Wallace Monument, but has the little "bumps" that the top of St Giles has.
It could be another cathedral of course, but looks very much like St Giles.
I'm in the US now, but lived in and around Edinburgh for 10 years, before returning 4 years ago...

Fascinating. I have a large leather pouch full of various pewter buttons, left over from my stint as a bootmaker in a leathershop; among them are a handful of buttons with precisely this design (likely the same size too); the only difference being a ring soldered to the back, rather than a pair of pins.
They're certainly not "vintage", the ones I have. Somewhere, someone out there is producing attractive pewter buttons of various designs, including one with this same mould.

My kilt pin
Doing some research led me to the name MacDiarmada. My last name is McDearmont. I have a brooch pin with the same circle in the middle. goes well with my Black Watch tartan!

Here is my latest kilt pin for the Wildcat tartan. I wanted something special for this tartan so I went onto ebay to see what was around and got this Victorian era pin at a great price. I am very pleased with it and am now looking for a Victorian Agate Anchor pin.

This is great
You guys have given me good ideas. I hadn't thought "outside the box." Was only gonna use kilt pins, on my kilts. However, you've shown me that other pins will work. I hadn't thought of that. I actually have other pins, which would look good. By the way, I like the Led Zeppelin pins, how cool! When my wife and I travel to Tucson, or the Phoenix area, we're kinda weird. We like to shop at thrift stores. Lately, I've been looking through their jewelry cases, for kilt pins. But, thanks to this thread, I'm gonna take a closer look, and keep a more open mind. My one and only kilt pin is a shiny sword, with a deer head/antlers on it. Bought it from ebay. Not much to brag about.

Walter Scott memorial?
Take a close look at the Walter Scott Monument, in Edinburgh. To me, this pin looks like it, but like you said, it appears as if the top of the pin (or monument) is missing. Look at the buttresses, on images of the monument, and those on your pin. To me, they're identical. I, too lived in Edinburgh, in the early 80's.

Aztec calendar....go figure!
Wow. An aztec calendar pin, on a kilt. Who would have thunk it? Just had a goofy idea....I could wear my old Az Dept of Corrections badge, on my kilt......naw.. I'd rather find some cool pins to wear, like you guys have done. I haven't worked for the prison in years. Actually grew to hate it, but that's another story. (side note: once attended a funeral for a fellow Corrections Officer. The AZ DOC actually had pipers come play, at her funeral. It was a sad occasion, but seeing/hearing three pipers, in DOC uniforms/kilts was great)

Let's see if I've figured out how to post pictures.
My husband and I kilted up to go to Disneyland for Thanksgiving this year. I wore one of these as my kilt pin:

It actually worked surprisingly well. It wasn't too big but had a fair amount of weight to it, and it was thematically appropriate.
I doubt if anyone in the park actually noticed, but whatever, right?
