Welcome from the land of ice and snow! And congratulations on your weight loss; that's excellent! As for some of your questions, I do wear a sporran with a utility kilt from time to time. I would suggest a simple leather daywear sporran or Rob Roy style would be best. But the utility like can certainly be worn without. For my own taste I would suggest passing on the dirk. To my eye it is a bit of an affectation.

Thanks. One of my sporrans is a Rob Roy. From some of my reading here, the arguments against a sporran with a utility kilt make sense to me. I'll reserve it as an option for now.
The dirk wasn't meant for the utility kilts, but to dress up a tartan kilt, if and when I get one. I always carry some sort of knife anyway.
