We have Canadian thistle here, invasive but nearly impossible to be rid of, (reminds me of a good friend of mine) we have vast fields out here that I will photograph once they sprout and bloom.

From what I was told some time ago by a policeman friend of mine, the thistle is forbidden in California and anyone growing it is subject to a hefty fine. I asked my nursery for one once as that is also the plant badge of the Stewart clan. They told me it could not be imported to Calif. and my police friend verified that fact.

Looking at Canadian thistle range maps it ranges from Alaska, Canada, and the bulk of the USA minus a few south-eastern states, I'd guess that despite Californias banning it's likely still growing all over the wilds of (mostly) northern California.

That interesting, as on Sunday I saw at least three species of thistle happily growing all over the place on San Bruno mountain. Of course, the mountain is peppered with non-native species. However, there are certainly native California thistles.

You crazy Northlanders have the same thistle? (Strangely called Canadian thistle, should be called most of North America thistle) The kind that after the nuclear holocost will be the only surviving thing outside of cockroaches????
Beautiful when in bloom, and a magnet for butterflies and humming birds, I just hate them prickly things in my grass!!
