Yes, Carberry Hill near Fa'side in East Lothian. His name was Robert, was born in about 1840 and married Margaret Wilson. They had six children, I believe, among them a Richard and a William. Any connection?

They homesteaded in 1878 on S.E. 31-11-14W near the small community of Petrel in the municipality of North Cypress. It says in my local history book that Robert invented a grain pickler. He also tried to make a perpetual motion machine for which he ordered special springs from England at a cost of $1000. I don't think any of his descendants are left in the district. Very cool to meet you here on X marks. I love heritage and history and its so neat to make these connections.

Yes, it is, and it happens surprisingly often on Xmarks. Robert also invented a Spark Arrestor for bee-hive burners that was widely used in British Columbia's Cariboo, I understand. The last spark was extinguished at the closure of a Quesnel sawmill in the 1970s.

Hi Gerond and a warm welcome from sunny Queensland!

Thank for the interesting introduction. Some great Ancestry research there. And looking very sharp, may I add?
    Regards, Sav.

    Hello Gerond

I was born and raised in Flin Flon and had many relatives in Swan River, Ochre River and Dauphin going back to the 1870s.

Hi, Gerond, and welcome to X Marks from the bottom end of Africa.
Your family history is most interesting.
Here in the Eastern Cape is a family of New York origin that also moved to Canada as a result of the American Revolution.
Their surname is Cuyler and they were of Dutch descent (from the colony of Nieuw Nederland), but thoroughly anglicised.
The one who came to South Africa was Jacob Glen Cuyler, who was a colonel in a Nova Scotia regiment and, after Britain took over the Cape in 1806, was sent to the town of Uitenhage to serve as landdrost (magistrate) there, because he spoke Dutch.
His father was mayor of Albany, New York, at one stage. (Albany had been the Dutch settlement of Fort Orange, which was the northernmost limit of Nieuw Nederland.)
Cuyler eventually retired from the military as a general. He had a farm just outside the town of Uitenhage which his descendants occupied until about half a century ago. It is now a museum, but his descendants are still to be found in the district.

In Port Elizabeth, where I live, there is a family of Davidsons that own a heavy equipment business (bulldozers and the like) and in their spare time run an aerobatic team.
They could well be related to you.
Port Elizabeth is the main city of the Eastern Cape, and now forms part of a metropole called Nelson Mandela Bay, which incorporates Uitenhage and a smaller town called Despatch.
    Regards,
    Mike
