    I (like the last ten comments) wear my kilt and hose like this photo.

    The top of my kilt feels better when it is snug against the bottom of my ribs and the hem above my patella.

    Top of the knee, with hose 3-ish fingers below. If it slips down a bit it still looks OK, but I don't like middle of the knee by default because it feels neither here-nor-there. Apart from being traditional, it's sort of an unspoken visual rebuttal to the local "$30 kilt with a t-shirt and sweatsocks" pub crowd who tend to wear them slung low on their hips with the bottom edge halfway down their shins.

    My knees are showing, but you can barely see. I had to resize my picture 4 times to get it small enough for Xmarks to let me upload it.
