Whatever you are comfortable in. I don't know which kilt I'll be wearing, but I will be wearing a kilt and most probably an open necked shirt. The rest depends on the weather and whether the grass is wet. If it is hot then sandals, otherwise hose and sandals or brogues and pullover / leather jacket / denim jacket. The problem with Scotland is that you have to have at least 3 seasons clothing to hand as you never know what you are going to come up against. Sometimes all in one day.
I'll be camping locally and walking to the gathering, so can decide on the day.

Like you I'll be using a telephoto lens to get close ups of the action, but will also have a second camera to hand for any interesting spectator shots.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!
