    Changing pleating

Please note that this is purely an academic question. I have no intention of pursuing this.

I am curious to know if a kilt pleated to the sett could ever be re-pleated to the stripe. On what factors might such an endeavor depend?

My initial feeling would be that this would, in general, not be capable.
A full traditional kilt will have the excess fabric behind the pleats cut away. If you try to change where the pleats are folded you would end up in a cut-away and there would be nothing to sew to.

I guess you could luck out and the stripe you want to pleat to would not be cut-away. You could even swap pleats around sometimes.

But for 99% of kilts with cut-aways I would say no.

Yup - I agree. And, even more than that, it would take a huge amount of work to take a kilt entirely apart to re-pleat it a different way. Yes, kilting tartan is expensive, but, holy schmoly, the labor it would take to pick a kilt apart and then re-make it if it were possible.....much better to sell the kilt and buy some new tartan to make another kilt!

I have totally dismantled two kilts and re-built them from scratch to achieve something different than the original maker. But both times the kilt had great sentimental value to the owner and something was wrong with the way it was made.

You can see one of the times I did this in this thread.

Is this a kilt or a jig-saw puzzle?
