I too have an Maxwell kilt in the ancient colors (and it's definitely more on the orange end of the red spectrum). I've found that it works well with a lovat green jacket (lovat green works well with any of the Maxwell tartans — ancient and hunting pictured):



If you want to stray a bit from the pipe band look, I'd suggest a balmoral bonnet in place of the glengarry. I have one that's fawn colored that works well with both the lovat green jacket and the Maxwell ancient tartan.
