I also think it's long. Thank for driving that point home for me I'm going to either look for a new jacket or get it tailored. I value your opinion thank you.

OK I have decided to wire my jaw into the smiling position!!! 😃😃😃 hahaha I might keep this jacket for winter and leave it longer and perhaps get another jacket with a shorter cut. Thank you I will also look into some shirts too! I didn't even think of that. I appreciate the post!

If you want to stray a bit from the pipe band look, I'd suggest a balmoral bonnet in place of the glengarry. I have one that's fawn colored that works well with both the lovat green jacket and the Maxwell ancient tartan. Here's a photo with Xmarkers Cloud (left) and Super 8mm a few years ago at the Texas Scottish Festival that shows the bonnet with the jacket and kilt, and ancient green hose:
Hope that helps.
Welcome aboard!

ShaunMaxwell,
WOW! Those look fantastic! Thank you for sharing and also it seems you have done your homework and it shows! Absolutely great looking ensembles you wear the Maxwell tartan very well. That lovat green is very nice with those kilts. I might be in the market for a lovat green jacket and waistcoat. I'll have to look out for one at the Scottish Festival in a few months.
Let me ask how did you come to own the whole set of maxwell tartans? I have seen computer renditions of the Maxwell hunting but never being worn! That's very nice! BTW that bottom picture looks like a prison bus just rolled over... Haha just kidding! That's my poor attempt at humor. You three obviously look very good.

Maxwell tartans
Maxwell7:
I appreciate the kind words! The Maxwell modern kilt is made from Martin Mills 16 oz. tartan from their Jura range. It's a fantastic value for the money and is teflon coated (which has come in handy at time or two!). The Maxwell ancient is Lochcarron tartan, just like yours. The Maxwell hunting tartan was a custom weave done by D.C. Dalgleish a few years ago. Matt Newsome of New House Highland made the kilt, which is a four-yard box pleat. I varied the colors a bit from the bottle green and deep red of the Maxwell modern colors, to make it a little more bold. I was pleased with the results.

Another forum member, David Maxwell, recently had a run of Maxwell hunting muted woven, which is very handsome. You can see it here:

Here's an image that shows the difference in the hues a bit more clearly:

Another nice variation that's a stock tartan is Maxwell muted, from House of Edgar (13 oz.). You can see a photo of forum member Mattie wearing it here:

I also agree that the jacket should be unbuttoned and it's a bit too long in the back. BUT, I would recommend you have that jacket tailored rather than replaced. It's a handsome jacket. No need to toss it!!

I would agree with Mr Daw, pin it up a couple of inches, to see how it looks, then adjust till you get what you want, then ask a seemstress to take it up. I have a similar jacket, tweed but not a kilt jacket and will be doing the same when I get measured for my new kilt in 3 weeks.
Looking good though, the little touches will make it look great and if you feel great you might even smile - just pulling your leg ( which is good natured fun if the term is not used in your locality).

I am impressed with those box pleats on that hunting kilt and the colors chosen are perfect. The contrast on those three pictured are amazing especially seeing them side by side really differentiates them. I dare ask what a custom woven kilt cost and after spending close to a grand on my ancient.. I probably don't want to know. Perhaps in due time I will consult you on a custom kilt.
I have a red Scott kilt that my pipe band had as old band stock gear that I obtained back in 2003. In fact it was worn in the old movie Devils brigade! I kind of treated that kilt like it was my maxwell growing up since it had similar red green pattern. That's why I went with the ancient colors on this kilt.. kind of change it up.. Im pretty excited about this kilt and feel fortunate to have a fellow Maxwell already do the leg work on a lot of the technicalities. You make it look easy!
