The problem is the cantle of Your sporran is Seaforth pattern and never could be worn by Camerons...

    Indeed

My thoughts exactly. The closest I’ve seen is the sporran of an Officer in the QOH. As previously posted, Seaforth pattern with new post amalgamation badge. My sporran has never been tinkered with, the Cameron badge is original to the cantle. As I understood it, after amalgamation, the regiment wore MacKenzie tartan for all but very senior ranks. My kilt is Cameron which wouldn’t have been worn by QOH ORs.

    Pattern confusion

Even more confusingly, the pattern is actually closer to that of the Gordon Highlanders than the Seaforths. The engraving is almost identical to the former.

yes , it is even more close to Gordons officers pattern cantle ...

So I could imagine that owner of this sporran made this "frankenstein sporran" to remember his service in Queen Own Cameron or Queen Own Highlanders (Seaforth and Camerons)...

    It's definitely not issued sporran.

    Or is it?

Today I found this image. It clearly shows the very same sporran in use circa 1896. What rank is the soldier wearing it?

No, sorry but You are wrong.

on your picture the typical Cameron Highlanders OR's sporran with black leather cantle and black leather tassels caps, as worn circa 1860s - 1961.

I’m sure I am wrong! Which bit in particular are you referring to? The image of the soldiers might not be clear but the chap on the left is definitely wearing a black sporran with metal cantle, not with black leather as in your last picture. Can you clarify please? Thanks.

Unfortunately we cannot trust artist' pictures, it's wrong way to make final conclusions about details of military uniforms In this particular case I suppose - it's because poor quality of image.
There are numerous photos of Cameron Highlanders ORs, lots of real sporrans and NO ONE of them has metal cantle...

Yes, I see your point. If only there was an ex QOCH out there reading this who could help!

I have asked one retired officer, serving in Queen Own Highlanders, The Highlanders and finally in Royal Regiment of Scotland.
    His reply was very interesting...

Quote: "... Just before the amalgamation of the Queen's Own Highlanders and Gordons the Sergeants' Mess got authority to wear a different sporran. The component parts were churned out and I suspect this is a product of overproduction..."
