A Buchanan Chief at long last

We have been celebrating all day and will do more at the New Hampshire Highland Games next week.

I had the privilege of meeting Michael --- The Buchanan --- last August and he is a going to be a great Chief for our Clan. He is very personable and approachable. After 337 years our Clan is complete once again.

The tartan he wears is Buchanan of Leny - a private family tartan.

No, the two are different. The chief's tartan has a plain green ground rather than on bisected by a black stripe. Here is a comparison between his and your tartans.

Having now had an opportunity to examine a specimen of the tartan, rather than relying on trying to interpret Press photographs, it’s clear that the ‘so-called’ Buchanan of Leny is the same as your tartan. What appeared to be a plain green square is in fact bisected by a green stripe.

This sett dates to 1850 and Smibert’s The Clans of the Highlands of Scotland where it was simply named Buchanan. It is therefore not unique to the new chief.

Rather confusingly, Scotweb (D. C. Dalgliesh Ltd) call the 1850 setting, as worn by Wareyin (Post #7) Buchanan of Leny.
Perhaps now that there is a chief he will confirm the name of his sett and ask Scotwed to amend their naming accordingly.

He told me that he was going to register the tartan in light of his new position.

Very happy for all the Buchanans! We of Clan Douglas have two gentlemen- to my understanding- that could claim the Chief title, but they both defer to each other for various reasons, so still no chief since 1761.
