    Three possibilities for the tartan

    The information for all three entries is suspect and should be treated with caution. I'm not convinced Wilsons wove this but they well could have done. It's certainly not their 'Smallest 42nd', that was exactly what it sounds like, the standard 42nd tartan in a small setting.

    The Clans Originaux collection (1880) includes a specimen of this named Black Watch

    Quite by chance the STA had an enquiry this week from an ex-member of the NYPD asking about the use of this sett to line their winter Reefer Jackets. The tradition is that they were granted permission to use it by Queen Victoria, something I doubt.
