Seems to me that the Allen Brothers tartans that look nice are usually the ones they lifted from then-current tartans.
Left to their own devices, their tartans were generally simple-minded, crude, and based on the false notion that in ancient times Clan tartans functioned as a sort of Heraldry on the battlefield.
They often re-used a simplistic unrefined pattern over and over, merely switching colours and/or adding a line or two.
