    It was a good day and nice to see a number of the other chiefs there: some I know; some I haven't seen in 30 years, and some I'd never met.

    I have to say, someone needs to take the new chief aside and offer some guidance on his dress.

    I hesitate to comment, other than, there is some scope for improvement. To use a turn of phrase that he will be familiar with, “ he needs to adjust his sights a tad”.

    What tartan is The Buchanan wearing? I don't recognize it.

    Inauguration tartan and matching bonanza

    It's the Buchanan inauguration tartan, designed by Lucy Buchanan, the new chief's daughter, a year or so ago.
    The striking thing about this picture is the rather garish matching, more redolent of practice in another part of the world.
