I will say that in other photos that orange looked more civilised. I'll try to find a photo that shows the colours better.
The russet brown(orange?) did not worry me too much, but the turquoise stripes killed the tartan for me.

What is the relationship to Irish beer I wonder, speaking as someone who drinks beer in Ireland fairly often?

I assume it's just a marketing gimmick.
Here in the US there's a vast number of people whose only connexion to Ireland is going into a pub with an overtly Irish-sounding name and getting a pint of Guinness while wearing a cheap Pakistani kilt on St Patrick's Day.
What could be more appealing than a cheap kilt in "Irish Beer" tartan?

Better colours for a beer tartan would be yellow/gold for the malted barley, green for hops, blue for the water, brown for the yeast.

Amen!
Or perhaps extremely dark brown for Guinness, beige for the head, amber for ales and red-brown for reds. (Not enough contrasts, probably.)
Just an aside, as a piper and a Guinness lover, I want bagpipes like this.

That turquoise + brown part of the tartan appears to have been directly lifted from Thompson Hunting.
I see a number of people wearing that tartan at every local Highland Games so my "eye" is used to it.

I'm not necessarily put off by it, but I'd like to see it in person since computer monitors are not always the most accurate way to judge hues.
