It’s not closing. It’s closed unfortunately.

A sad day for Scotland.

This was posted on another site, I'll post it here anonymously:
In December we placed an order With DC Dalgleish for 2 x 13m lengths of Custom weave tartans, which we paid In Full and up front.
We recently heard that they had ceased trading but we had no official communication from them.
After a few weeks of going back and forth with Nick Fiddes we finally got given the Receivers name and today we have found out that we are basically owed nothing for the order we placed.

Additionally, I’ve heard that this also happened to several other kilt makers. Sad for the company to go out on such a sour note.

I suppose I saw this coming.
They made the cloth for my Cameron reproduction kilt years ago and the quality of the cloth as well as the tonalities were outstanding (the red field was akin to claret and the green stripes were brownish - so as not to use the term "khaki" and bring that up again... ). Having lost quite a bit of weight, that kilt went in the closet, awaiting more "generous" days. I decided to get another kilt of the same fabric made for a skinnier me.
After several months of waiting, I began a series of monthly queries: always met with "it's weaving now", "the loom broke", "it's weaving now", "there's trouble in the glen", "it's weaving now", "It's at the finishers", and finally "it's weaving now elsewhere." That last one go me nervous, and rightfully so.
When it arrived almost a year later, it was disappointing to find that the colors were different (closer to orangish than claret and dark green stripes), the sett was substantially smaller, and the quality of cloth underwhelming..

Perhaps those thinking of buying a synthetic cloth kilt, might now re-consider their choice? I know that wool cloth is much more expensive and so on and wanting the kilt NOW is an attractive thought. However.................
We don't know, of course, if poor management was involved------- BUT.....................and nevertheless.......................the closure of this scarce part of the traditional cloth industry is in part one of the obvious and inevitable consequences of many following the synthetic cloth route.
Just saying.

I have an order in progress. The kilt maker got the cloth. He confirmed DC Dalgliesh is closed on his Facebook page. I got mostly top quality cloth.
Last year they did a weave for an experimental tartan and had a hansewn kilt by Burnet Streuth and it looks great. (school colors)

What a shame, and a terrible loss. They had some of the nicest cloth, and most pleasing colors IMO. Sad.

Spot on, here, Jock..!
I have always felt that every synthetic material kilt is a loss to Scotland's traditional weavers, but if price rather than quality and authenticity is the deciding factor, Dalgleish's demise is part of the price paid.
We hear a great deal about 'cultural appropriation' when it comes to fashion and clothing, so it's a pity people take a different view when it comes to Highland dress and the long-etablished makers of it.
It sometimes feels like we're in the tail-end of a good night out - we've had a great time with pals, but the last-orders bell has been rung, the lights are being dimmed and 'Time please, gentleman..!' has already been shouted.
The only thing left is a lonely trudge home, through dark and dank streets.
