You are absolutely correct, of course, David. The style of sporran is also very important as regards 'formal' and 'informal'. I am afraid I was thinking only of the colour aspect in my response to Murray.
A quick look at the sporran section of any good quality kiltmaker's website, and you'll have an explanation of what-is-what when it comes to style.
Nevertheless, it is generally acknowledged that brown = informal, and black = formal.
