Looking for my first sporran
I have pretty much decided to purchase a Buzz Kidder. My only question is what color? Black or Brown...

I'm in the process of making the same decision (looks like I'll purchase one from www.celticempire.com) and I'm going with brown.
Two reasons. First, my kilt will be a Maple Leaf tartan and the brown will go well with that. Second, brown will match the boots than I will most often wear with the kilt. And third (did I say two reasons?) I'm expecting to most often wear my kilt casually (not semi-formal or formal) and the brown is less formal than the black.
So in other words, I think it depends on what you are looking for.
Having said that, I do expect a black one will be in the works before too long.

That depends, Paul, on whether you intend to wear it formally or informally - and on the colour of your shoes/boots and kilt belt.
To look good, your leather accessories should all be of the one colour - brown or black. It doesn't really do to mix them and, if you don't look good you won't feel good!
In essence:
Brown = casual, informal and day-wear.
Black = 'dressy', semi-formal, formal and evening-wear. Although black can work casually if you are wearing black boots with your hose rolled down.

Say, Hamish, you (and many others) say brown leather with brown leather, but does it have to be the SAME brown?

Obviously, it would be best if that can be achieved, but it might be quite difficult to track down perfect matches. Different shades of brown worn together are still better than a mix of brown and black.

I agree that black is more formal. I'm starting with the sporran and building on that.
As I have learned from the wise sages on the forum, I know better than to mix and match...
I plan on mostly casual wear.

I'll agree with the others here Paul. However It does really depend on the sporran style and not so much the colour.
It's not just a cse of Brown casual and black formal. Although brown has a less formal image. I have a shop purchased Sporran which I'd never use formally I also have a dress sporran I'd never use to walk in the woods with.
So if want want the best of both worlds go for a black semi dress with a fur front. They make a good comprimise.Especially if you haven't the funds to buy one of each, and A good starting point.

You are absolutely correct, of course, David. The style of sporran is also very important as regards 'formal' and 'informal'. I am afraid I was thinking only of the colour aspect in my response to Murray.
A quick look at the sporran section of any good quality kiltmaker's website, and you'll have an explanation of what-is-what when it comes to style.
Nevertheless, it is generally acknowledged that brown = informal, and black = formal.
