You can see all the Clergy tartans at http://www.tartansauthority.com/web/...rtan=By+Tartan.

The one called Clergy Blue is the most readily available.

As far as I know, none is associated with a particular denomination, though of course the Presbyterian/Church of Scotland and Roman Catholic denominations are the most prevalent in Scotland.

From the notes for the various Clergy tartans, a bit of history:

It is well known that in earlier times the Highland clergy wore the Highland dress and carried arms. Many attempts were made to prevent them wearing tartan and to force them to wear conventional ministerial habit. These, however, had only limited success. The Clergy tartan is sometimes called "The Priest's Sett", but in the Highlands is known as "Breacan nan Cleirach" - the tartan of the Clergy. As with so very many tartans, there are many variations of the Clergy sett, due to the vagaries of the illustrators of tartan books. There is no categorisation for occupational tartans so all the clergy tartans are classed as "Clan/Family".

In fact, Miss Cyndi, the first American Episcopal Bishops were ordained by three Scottish Bishops in the mid 1780's. No English Bishop would consecrate a bishop for the rebellious former colonies.

Ah, the irony! Now we have American Episcopal congregations aligning with the C of E as Anglicans, in protest of recent developments!

What's funny of course, is how the Clergy carried pistols and blades.

Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition with those biscuits!

I wonder if somebody could pull it off in the modern age?

At the moment, the American Episcopal Church is in bad odor with the rest of the Anglican Communion about ordaining the homosexual bishop of New Hampshire.

Personally I'm of two minds about the situation. I opposed the ordination of Bishop Robinson. But I also am opposed to outsiders trying to tell us how we should run our Church.

The fireworks are far form over. Wait and see what unfolds over the next two or three years. If the situation is not settled beforehand, the next Lambeth Confrence is liable to be a real donnybrook.

I don't think it's really a matter of outsiders telling the American church how it should be run. I think it's the rest of the Anglican Communion saying that the ECUSA is breaking with Anglican tradition and doctrine over these issues of ordination, and by extension, marriage of homosexuals.

You are so right about the even greater storm now brewing. Let us hope that no one comes armed, as Dreadlock-Ness Monster mentioned in his post!

If the Clergy were armed, as they were obviously meant to be, there wouldn't be any of this equine excrement going on in the church. Some numbskull would have already done and got himself shot. And the pedophiles would have had their brains blown clean out the back of their skull. The church would return to it's best behaviour damn quick.

A bunch of sissified politically correct Nancy boys now.

I had better stop before I offend somebody or piss somebody off.

Ordained. Exiled. Iconoclast. Keep the faith brothers and sisters.
