Great idea Todd, and a beautiful tartan!
I liked the other tartan's shown on that page. I'd like to get some of that Jones Tartan to make my wife a sash or shawl.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page, & you will see the St. Columba tartan -- it is very striking indeed.
I'm only sorry I didn't think of them before!

Oh dear, why did you show me that site? I love those tartans, especially the St.Columba.
I would love to wear it on my visit to Iona this year.

tartans...
I'm partial to the Arctic & Antarctic tartans myself, but the St. Columba really caught my eye.
There is another St. Columba tartan in Zaczek's "World Tartans" which isn't as attractive.
A brief introduction to St. Columba may be found here:

Alright Matt, so say I did design my own tartan. You mentioned it wouldn't be official because I'd have no Clan Chief to authorise it. Fair enough, but since there are tartans for groups other than clans etc. I wonder whether:
1 - I could find a group to endorse it.
2 - Form a group, and make it 'official'.

Todd,
Why didn't I think of the St. Columba or St. Patrick! I have a hanging in my bedroom in the St. Columba tartan, after all!
There is also a St. David tartan, as well. I agree, these would be excellent choices.
(There is also a St. Kilda tartan -- a cookie to the first who can tell me why this wouldn't have any religious affiliation).
Aye,
Matt

Galant,
Basically, for a tartan to be "official" then it has to have the explicit approval of whatever the tartan is designed for.
My point was that if you were designing a tartan for all Christians to wear, you'd never be able to make it "official" because I doubt you'd be able to get a letter of approval from the "chief" so to speak.
Now you could conceivable get some particular church or denomination to officially adopt the tartan. Obviously this would involve some campaigning on your part, but it could be done.
Remember, though, a tartan doesn't have to be "official." Most of the tartans on record have never been officially approved by the clan, family, place or group they are named for and so are, strictly speaking, "unofficial" tartans. That doesn't stop people from wearing them, though. That's all I was getting at.
Aye,
Matt

St. Kilda...
Someone else already got it, and I misunderstood Matt's original question -- edited.
Matt, I forgot about the St. David's tartan -- shame on me!

"The name St Kilda is misleading as there never was a St Kilda associated with islands. It was first used instead of Hirte, or Hirta, on a map published in 1540, but for an island near Lewis. On a map of 1592 it was used for the St Kilda archipelago.
The word may be a corruption of the Old Norse word 'Skildir' meaning shields, and possibly refers to the shape of the islands when viewed from a distance at sea."

Ooh, now the St. David's I could go for, that's a nice tartan.
I heard what you were saying Matt, I was just thinking it would be nice to have something official, and maybe a 'Clan God' with it's own tartan might be good. A society of tartan/kilt loving Christians/servants of God.
